Robert Frost once said, “Earth is the right place for love: / I don’t know where it’s likely to go better.” And if humans only exist on Earth, then I agree a hundred per cent, because no one loves quite like we do. Just looking at someone a little longer because they look so beautiful in that moment, or telling them over and over how much you love and adore them - it’s all so achingly human. Words of affirmation, to me, is one of the most underrated love languages. It is so expressive, yet incredibly intimate. It’s what I lean into when actions alone don’t feel like enough. When I just have to say it, because I need you to know how much you mean to me. I will tell you I love you, and I will tell you again, and again, because that’s how full my heart is. Today, I’ve put together a list of songs, both Hindi and English, that remind me of what it’s like to be loved loudly, wholeheartedly, and verbally. If words of affirmation are your love language too, these tracks might just be the thing for you. Scroll down, press play, and let them brighten your day.

The first song that comes to mind when I think of words of affirmation is ‘Best Part’ by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R. It feels like a warm blanket made of words, comforting in a way that’s hard to describe. The lyrics feel like someone put your emotions into words. “You’re the coffee that I need in the morning” reminds me of how, when you spend enough time with someone, you start picking up their habits—the way they talk, the things they love, or that you start drinking coffee because they do too. Mundane moments start to hold meaning. And even after a long day, a part of you still craves their presence. “You’re the Tylenol I take when my head hurts”—that line is so poetic and true. It captures how love, through the simplest words, can feel like relief. The way Daniel Caesar and H.E.R. sing it with such honesty is what makes it so immersive. Whenever I think of the people I’ve loved, I always come back to this: “If life is a movie, then you’re the best part.” Because sometimes, they really are.

    Listen to the melody here.

When it comes to songs, who does love songs better than One Direction? Being a former Directioner myself, here are a few songs by them, expressing love in the most articulate and poetic manner. ‘Olivia’ is one song that always has my heart. It is a song you would want to listen to when you want to scream your love for that one person out for the world to hear. The vivid imagery in the song - “This isn’t the stain of a red wine, I’m bleeding love” - is the most heart-wrenching line there is. “I’ve been idolising the light in your eyes, Olivia” is a lyric I could not imagine being written better.

‘I Want to Write You a Song’ is another one by them. It is the most underrated song of all time, and I think more people should hear it. You just know that the One Direction boys’ strongest love language was words of affirmation when you hear the opening lines - “I want to write you a song / One as beautiful as you are sweet”. And the way they end the song will just make you melt in your seat - “I wanna write you a song / One to make your heart remember me / So anytime I’m gone / You can listen to my voice and sing along”.

Next we have, ‘If I Could Fly’ with the most vulnerable lyrics - “For your eyes only / I show you my heart” and “I’m missing half of me / When we’re apart”.

A song that is my go-to to sing aloud all the time is ‘Home’ by Edith Whiskers. It describes the feeling of finding a person who feels like your safe space, your comfy space. Any new experience and you’d wish they were there with you because you know how much you love them - “Nothing new is sweeter than with you” - the singer expresses the nuances of love so beautifully in this song.

Easing into a bilingual track, ‘Plum Pudding’ from ‘The Archies’ is honestly the sweetest thing. Lyrics like “मेरा दिल guitar करता ting-ting for you, my love” and “Oh Ruby, if life were plum pudding / You'd be the sugar and spice” make me feel like romance through poetry is a lost art. Because if I could tell someone I love them by singing this song—and they actually got it without laughing it off—that would be the best. That’s how beautiful these lyrics are. Not everyone will understand, but maybe that’s what makes it even more special.

‘Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche’ by Sanam and Sanah Moidutty is best to vibe to at a party. The kind of song you can dance to with your partner. It is goofy and affectionate all at once. When I listen to this song, I can imagine boomer parents coyly vibing to this song, keeping the spirit of their love alive.

Voh Dekhnay Mein’ by Ali Zafar is not so quiet an admiration for that special someone. He notices all her quirks and loves her for all the reasons that have made her her. He appreciates tiny habits and qualities that together come to say how much he loves and adores her.

Tum Ho Toh’ by Farhan Akhtar is a slow number that will get you all in the feels and make you reflect and dive deep into your memories with the one person you love most. There is not one lyric that I prefer. To mention a few, “Tum ho toh, gaata hain dil / Tum nahi, toh geet kahaan” and “Tum nahi, toh kya hain yahan”. The vocals are so soft and soulful, making you want to listen to this song with itminaan.

Ending this list with every musician’s staple song. ‘Tu Hi Hai’ by Amit Trivedi, Arijit Singh, and Kausar Munir. When this iconic trio comes together to create a harmonic song, you know you can’t not like it. The song is a sort of pyaar ka izhaar when the lyrics mention “Mere sheron mein yeh kaun hain? Meri shayari mein kaun hain? / Tu hi hai”.

I hope you enjoy these songs as much and more than I do. Stream, download, and share these songs with that special someone to let them know how much you love them - only on Gaana!
