Taylor Swift is facing a legal challenge over the title of her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl, with a lawsuit alleging trademark infringement, false designation, and unfair competition. The case was filed in a California federal court by Maren Wade, a former Las Vegas showgirl who owns the trademark for “Confessions of a Showgirl.” Wade claims that Swift’s album title is too similar to her established brand and has caused confusion in the marketplace.

According to the filing, Maren Wade is seeking unspecified damages from Taylor Swift and UMG Recordings, along with a court order that would prevent further use of The Life of a Showgirl title. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, her lawyer Jaymie Parkinnen stated that a solo performer who spent over a decade building a brand should not see it diminished by a larger entity entering the space.

Wade’s association with the “Confessions of a Showgirl” brand dates back to 2014, the same year she appeared on America’s Got Talent. Around that time, she also began writing a column under the same name for the Las Vegas Weekly, sharing personal insights from her career as a showgirl. Over the years, the concept expanded into a podcast and a live musical production, with her trademark covering live performances, theatrical works, and television content.

The lawsuit further claims that Taylor Swift and UMG did not introduce their similarly titled album quietly. Instead, the filing alleges that the name was quickly used across consumer products, labels, packaging, and retail channels, targeting an audience Wade had spent years cultivating.

Adding weight to Maren Wade’s argument, the complaint notes that when Swift attempted to trademark The Life of a Showgirl, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office declined the application. The decision reportedly cited the similarity between the two phrases, particularly the shared use of “of a Showgirl," and the likelihood of confusion given their overlap in musical and theatrical domains.

Maren Wade’s legal team also argues that Taylor Swift ignored the existing trademark and that the growing association of the phrase with the pop star has undermined Wade’s brand identity. Despite Wade using the name since 2014, the lawsuit claims that many now mistakenly believe she has copied Swift’s album.
