Punjabi singer and poet Satinder Sartaaj has been getting a lot of love lately for Jaiye Sajana from Dhurandhar: The Revenge. While the song has been making waves online, Sartaaj recently shared an interesting personal memory connected to the film, and it involves Yami Gautam’s father, Mukesh Gautam.

During his performance at the Jahan-e-Khusrau World Sufi Music Festival held at Purana Quila in Delhi on March 29, Satinder Sartaaj spoke about how he mentioned Mukesh Gautam while speaking to filmmaker Aditya Dhar about the song.

“When I got a call to do a song for Dhurandhar, I told Aditya Dhar that your father-in-law, Mukesh Gautam, has played a very big role in shaping my libaas (attire). He (Dhar) was very happy to hear that,” Sartaaj said. He then went on to explain the story behind that statement.

Back in 2003, when he was pursuing his doctorate in Sufism at Panjab University, Sartaaj got an opportunity to be part of a television episode based on Baba Waris Shah. “Yami Gautam’s father, Mukesh Gautam sir, was the head of a television channel in Chandigarh at that time. He was making a 30-minute episode on Baba Waris Shah, and was looking for someone who could act as a narrator and also sing live,” Sartaaj shared.

He added, “Someone told him about me, saying there was a boy at PU. I went there and said, ‘Yes sir, I can try.’ He (Mukesh Gautam) asked what I would wear. I told him I had a salwar kameez.” The shoot took place at Dara Studio in Mohali, and that is where Sartaaj’s now-famous look first came together.

He recalled noticing the black curtains inside the studio and asking for one. Inspired by an old black-and-white image of Waris Shah that he kept in his hostel room, he wrapped the cloth around his head in a similar style. “When I came out, Mukesh sir said, ‘Amazing, you look very good.’”

For the unversed, Mukesh Gautam is a respected name in Punjabi television and cinema. He also won a National Award in 2024 for Best Punjabi Film for Baghi Di Dhee.

Satinder Sartaaj, meanwhile, has remained one of the most respected voices in Punjabi music for over a decade. Known for songs like Sai, Ikko Mikke, Jalsa, Maasoomiyat, Udaarian, Rutba, and Sajjan Raazi, he has built a loyal audience through music that blends poetry, philosophy, and emotion.
