Singer Céline Dion is set to return to the stage this year with her first full concert run since revealing her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome in 2022. The Grammy-winning star has announced a 10-show residency at Paris La Défense Arena, scheduled between September 12 and October 14, 2026, marking a major comeback after years away from regular live performances.

In a video shared on her birthday, Celine Dion thanked fans for their support and said she was feeling “strong” and “excited” to return.

    What is stiff-person syndrome?

The announcement has also brought renewed attention to stiff-person syndrome (SPS), the rare neurological condition Dion has been battling. It is an uncommon disorder that affects the brain and nervous system and is known to cause muscle stiffness, rigidity, and painful spasms, often in the torso and limbs. The condition can make simple movement difficult and, in severe cases, can even affect a person’s ability to walk or function normally.

SPS is considered extremely rare, with an estimated one to two cases per million people. It is also seen more often in women than in men.

    What causes stiff-person syndrome?

Stiff-person syndrome is believed to be linked to autoimmune activity, where the body mistakenly attacks parts of its own nervous system. In many cases, the condition is associated with antibodies that interfere with GABA, a brain chemical that helps regulate nerve activity. When that process is disrupted, the nervous system can become overactive, which may lead to recurring spasms, body stiffness, pain, and even emotional symptoms such as anxiety or depression.

The condition is also sometimes linked to other autoimmune disorders, such as type 1 diabetes and thyroid issues.

    What are the symptoms?

One of the most difficult parts of SPS is that its symptoms can be unpredictable. People with the condition may experience sudden muscle spasms triggered by loud sounds, physical touch, emotional stress, or even changes in temperature. These spasms can last from a few seconds to several minutes and may affect the whole body or just one area.

Over time, the condition can also begin to affect posture, balance, and mobility, making it harder for a person to walk or move around comfortably.

    Is there a treatment?

At present, there is no known cure for stiff-person syndrome, but symptoms can be managed through medication, physical therapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care. Diagnosis is usually made through blood tests and electromyography (EMG), depending on the severity and pattern of symptoms. While treatment often focuses on the physical and neurological side of the condition, emotional support can also play an important role, especially for people living with a long-term and unpredictable illness.
