Just a day before taking oath as Nepal’s youngest Prime Minister, rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, released his new music video Jai Mahakali on Thursday. The song, which carries a strong message of patriotism and national unity, features visuals from Balen’s election campaign and quickly grabbed attention online. According to reports, the track crossed 1.5 lakh views on YouTube within just a few hours of its release.

Interestingly, Jai Mahakali was originally recorded nearly a decade ago and has now been brought back with fresh campaign footage, giving it a new political and emotional context.

Reports also suggest that two more songs, Maya Chha and Sabaailai Hatar Chha are expected to be released soon, showing that Balen Shah may continue to stay connected with the public through music even as he steps into the country’s top political role.

On Thursday, Balen was elected as the leader of the Parliamentary Party of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), officially clearing the way for him to become Prime Minister. The party had already projected him as its top candidate ahead of the elections. The RSP emerged as the clear winner in Nepal’s March 5 general elections, securing 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives and comfortably forming a majority government.

Balen, who earlier served as Kathmandu’s mayor, took oath on Friday. With this, he became the first leader from Nepal’s Madhes region to hold the country’s top executive office. The RSP’s central committee confirmed his election as party leader soon after the newly elected members of the House took their oath, following a proposal by party chairman Rabi Lamichhane.
