The much-awaited Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, will now release in standard theatres and IMAX worldwide on April 24, 2025. The film was originally scheduled for an October release, but the date has been moved up. In the U.S., Lionsgate will handle distribution, while Universal Pictures will release the film in international markets, except for Japan, where Kino Films is in charge.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, Michael stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, in the lead role. The film is produced by Oscar-winning producer Graham King, best known for The Departed. The story promises to give audiences an intimate look at Jackson’s rise to fame and his lasting legacy. According to the film’s synopsis, “‘Michael’ explores the global superstar’s journey to become known to the world as the King of Pop, presenting an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known.”

Although production wrapped in May 2024, the film went through reshoots and was initially reported to be a long cut. There were even talks of releasing it in two parts. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer had earlier said the film might move to 2026, but it is now officially set for April 2025. The project reportedly has a $155 million budget.

The film features a strong supporting cast, including Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Michael’s parents, Miles Teller as his advisor John Branca, Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy, and Kat Graham as Diana Ross. Other real-life figures portrayed in the film include Quincy Jones, La Toya Jackson and Dick Clark. Liv Symone, Kevin Shinick, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, and Kendrick Sampson will also be seen playing prominent roles in the biopic.

Michael aims to be a powerful tribute to the life, music, and legacy of one of pop culture’s greatest icons.
