The copyright controversy surrounding Good Bad Ugly has reignited public debate over music ownership and artistic credit. Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja recently sent a legal notice to the makers of the upcoming Ajith Kumar-starrer Good Bad Ugly, accusing them of using three of his iconic songs without his consent. The notice demanded ₹5 crore in compensation, a public apology, and the removal of the songs from the film, sparking discussions across the industry and social media.

While the producers stated that they had followed due process and secured permissions from the music labels involved, many netizens criticised Ilaiyaraaja, citing similar incidents from the past. However, his brother, lyricist and composer Gangai Amaran, came forward with a strong defence, rejecting claims that the legal action was financially motivated. “Do you think my brother lacks money? He has more than enough. We are struggling to even spend what we have,” Gangai Amaran said, firmly dismissing the idea that the notice was about monetary gain.

When it was suggested that they could donate their wealth to others, Amaran was equally clear and stated, “We have earned our money through hard work. Our children should benefit from it. Others should also strive to succeed on their own.” He emphasised that the family does help people, but they choose not to publicize it. Talking about what Ilaiyaraaja wanted with the legal notice, he added, “My brother isn’t unreasonable. He just wants people to respect the art and the artist.” He added that the continued public love for Ilaiyaraaja’s music proves its cultural value, and the composer simply wants proper recognition. Meanwhile, the film's producers told Hindustan Times, “We have taken permission from all the music labels required… We have done things by the book.”
