The electronic music world is mourning the loss of DJ Dan, whose real name was Daniel Wherrett. While news of his passing has deeply saddened fans and fellow artists, the exact cause of his death has not been officially confirmed so far.

A representative confirmed the news in a statement to Billboard. The statement read, “It is with profound sorrow, deep admiration, and an enduring sense of gratitude and love that we announce the passing of Daniel Wherrett, known professionally to the world simply as DJ Dan, one of the most beloved, genre-defying, and genuinely influential pioneers in the history of American electronic music. He leaves behind not just a discography, but a culture, a way of feeling music that touched millions of souls across four decades and five continents.”

Since the official announcement did not mention a cause of death, several unverified claims have surfaced online. One such rumour suggested that he may have suffered a heart attack, but there has been no official confirmation to support that at this time. Amid the speculation, many from the music community have urged fans not to spread unverified information and to wait for a confirmed update, if and when one is shared.

    Who was DJ Dan?

DJ Dan was one of the most recognised names to come out of the West Coast house music movement and was closely associated with the late 1980s and early 1990s rave scene. He first started performing in Seattle clubs before moving to Los Angeles, where he became part of underground events like No-Doz. He later shifted to San Francisco in 1993 and went on to form the influential Funky Tekno Tribe collective.

He also worked on remixes for artists including Depeche Mode, New Order, Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson. Apart from his work as a DJ and producer, he also founded InStereo Recordings and performed at major music festivals, including EDC and Ultra.

Born and raised in Olympia, Washington, DJ Dan later moved to Seattle, where he was first introduced to electronic dance music, the genre that would go on to define his career.
