Chinmayi’s journey in playback singing began with A. R. Rahman himself. She made her debut with the emotional track Oru Dheivam Thantha Poove from Kannathil Muthamittal. She was just a teenager at the time. She has since sung many beloved songs, including Rahman’s Tere Bina from Guru.
More recently, she was in the spotlight for her version of Muththa Mazhai from Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life. Performed live at the film’s audio launch, her rendition went viral on YouTube, gaining over 50 million views. Fans even compared it to Dhee’s original version in the movie, which stars Silambarasan TR, Abhirami, Nasser, and Trisha. Chinmayi also sang the Hindi and Telugu versions of the track. Impressed by her performance, music composer Vijay Antony also expressed interest in working with her.

For the unversed, Chinmayi has been facing a shadow ban in her Tamil singing and dubbing career ever since she became the voice of #MeToo in the Tamil industry. She not only called out her alleged abuser, lyricist Vairamuthu but also stood by other women who came out claiming Vairamuthu had abused them on various occasions. Following this, the singer was banned from the Tamil industry, citing payment dues with the dubbing union. In a recent interview, the singer also opened up how she continued to receive abuse, death and rape threats in the following years but that finally turned around with her highly acclaimed performance of Muththa Mazhai at the Thug Life audio launch.
